INLAND #3: Juggling Lilith's Crumbs
Lilith has many guises and incarnations. Her image and her reputation have been pulled apart, dissected, distorted and the crumbs have been scattered throughout cultural history. In Juggling Lilith’s Crumbs, artists Flora Bradwell and Sylwia Narbutt present six new works exploring the complex character of Lilith and notions of personal identity alongside text from Scott Lawrence Macfadyen. By playfully merging fantastical, everyday and archival imagery Bradwell and Narbutt present a contemporary reimagining of Lilith as an icon of power and resistance to patriarchal expectations of women.
Taking place as part of Deptford X Fringe Festival and APT Open Studios, Juggling Lilith's Crumbs is the third project in a series by Inland Project, an artist run group who create portable exhibitions in printed format. Inland Project was founded in 2016 as a response to the lack of affordable exhibition space in London in order to provide an accessible platform for contemporary artists.
Flora Bradwell’s carnivalesque and vibrantly trashy practice sees her and her alter-ego Bella Lordwarf creating paintings as artefacts, videos as propaganda and performances as happenings. Flora's work has been exhibited, screened and performed across the UK and internationally. Selected outings include GENERAL STORE, Hewing Wittare, London (2018), European Media Arts Festival, Osnabrück, (2018), I Have A Penis, Zaratan, Lisbon (2017), Femmes Fatale, LSFF, ICA, London (2014). Flora will begin an MFA in Fine Art Painting at the Slade in September 2018.
Sylwia Narbutt is interested in forms that are somehow changed from their original self. She completed her MFA in Painting at the Warsaw’s Academy of Fine Arts in 2004. She has exhibited internationally, selected shows include, Peckham International Art Fair, 2017, The Threadneedle Prize, Mall Galleries, 2016, MOTHERLAND, ASC Gallery, 2014, Preview Berlin, 2005. In 2018 Sylwia was awarded the a-n Development Bursary to create links with the Caucasus art scene.
